A 1912 Model Reeves Cross Compound 40-140 Horsepower Steam Engine Used To Sow Wheat With Three One-Way Disk Seeders On The George Routledge Farm At Delisle, Sk. Routledge'S 1937 Crop Had Been A Total Failure Due To Drought. When It Came Time To Seed The 1938 Crop, He Did Not Have Sufficient Funds To Buy Fuel And Oil For Any Of His Mccormick-Deering 22-36 Tractors. Rather Than Not Seed, He Used The Reeves Steam Engine Which Had Been In Storage For 12 Years. Fuel Was Supplied By Straw From The 1936 Wheat Crop And Water From Spring Run-Off. A Dog Is In The Foreground In Front Of This Hide-Covered, Temporary Hunting Canoe. The Land Around Is Stony. The Moosehide Canoe Was Made By A Swampy Cree Trapper In The 1940s. This Type Of Canoe Was Made In The Spring In Northern Manitoba When The Small Creeks And Rivers Were Swollen And Bark Canoes Were Not In Common Use In These Areas. This One Was About Ten Feet Long And Was Probably Dismantled After About Three Weeks Use So The Hide Could Be Reused. Canoes Of This Type Could Be Made Quickly By Letting The Hide Dry To The Shape Desired Then Reinforced By A Network Of Willow Or Ash Limbs |
